RECOMMENDED FABRICS & SUPPLIES FOR WINGS:
Main Fabric: 50cm each of the main fabric and appliqué fabric. You will need a lightweight woven fabric. Poplin or quilting cotton is perfect and a great choice for your first pair since they are easy to sew. Linen, chambray and silk are also good options. Knit fabrics or thicker woven fabrics are not recommended.
(Based on 115cm wide fabric.)
50cm heavyweight interfacing: You can use fusible or sew-in interfacing. Heavyweight is essential. This forms the ‘bones’ of your wings. Don’t think you can skip this step, or double up on mid-weight interfacing. You need heavy interfacing - it will feel like cardboard to touch.
50cm medium or heavyweight fusible interfacing: You will fuse this interfacing to both your wing pieces. Medium will be be easier to handle during construction; heavyweight will make far superior wings.
50cm wadding (batting): 5mm—15 mm high wadding is ideal. Go thicker if you dare! Fusible fleece is the easiest to use—its fusible nature means it won’t slip while sewing. However, it is generally more expensive than standard wadding, which will work just as well.
Maximum 100cm of 2.5cm wide elastic.
Spray Quilting Glue/Washaway Sewing Tape: Not essential but extremely helpful!
RECOMMENDED FABRICS & SUPPLIES FOR TAIL:
Main Fabric: 50cm - Small, 60cm - Medium, 70cm - Large
Most apparel fabrics will work for the tail. Fleece is a perfect choice for beginners since it is easy to sew and doesn’t fray. Light to mid-weight wovens such as cotton poplin or quilting cotton work well. Lighter denims or corduroys are also an option. Mid-weight knit fabrics such as sweatshirt fleece can also work. Jersey is possible, but be aware that it will stretch more around the waistband so you may wish to add a larger piece of velcro.
15cm Spike Fabric: Any of the options listed under ‘main fabric’ are possible, but lightweight wovens are the best choice.
15cm Medium Interfacing: Apply to your spikes, straps and tailback. Heavy interfacing can also be used and creates spikier spikes!
Hollow Fibre Filling (Soft Toy Stuffing): Approximately 300g - 500g, depending on the brand used and how firm you wish your tail to be.
10cm of 5cm wide Hook and Loop Tape (Velcro)
RECOMMENDED FABRICS & SUPPLIES FOR MASK:
Main Fabric: Craft felt is the easiest option here. However, most fabrics can be used if you add interfacing to them. Non-fraying fabrics such as fleece or wool blends are best for the main body of the mask. This pattern can be made using scraps and offcuts. The largest piece needs less than a 21cm square.
Consider the stability/structure of the fabrics you choose. If they are thin/floppy then apply interfacing.
Using felt is the perfect option for beginners or children. You don’t even need to sew, you can use fabric glue for all steps in the mask pattern.
Elastic: approximately 30cm
If in doubt, cut extra, try on your model and trim as necessary.
I recommend 20mm plush elastic as it’s very soft to wear. However, pretty much any kind of elastic can be used.
Alternatively you could use two 35cm pieces of 25mm wide ribbon or similar.
