She asked for matching dresses, how could I refuse?
Give it a few more years and the thought of "twinning" with mum will most likely make her shiver with horror, so for now, I'll make the most of it!
I'm not big on ruffles and frills (neither is my daughter) but when I saw the waterfall raglan dresses popping up on Instagram, it was promptly added to my "must sew" list.
This pattern by Chalk and Notch conveniently comes in a kid's and adult size so picking a pattern was easy. Plus it's a quick sew, and this wide dress would require minimal pattern adjustments.
It is also the perfect design to sew something in a modal knit, a fabric that is lightweight, and very drapey, ideal for summer.
So the day I finished the two dresses, my daughter and I put them on and happily hopped around the house. Until around 5pm a friend of mine dropped in:
"Oh, you two are already in pyjamas!"
Me: "Euh...well... euh" (speechless)
She is one of those brutally honest friends (I love that about her). And she was right... I had concerns the dress looked a bit too much like a nightgown. She thought my daughter can get away with it, but maybe not me.
This is due to my fabric choice: a very drapey modal with a light coloured print. This stretchy fabric is often used for sleepwear and divine to wear. It's one of those soft fabrics you want to wrap yourself into after a hard days work.
So while my girl has been living in her dress by day, I could go to sleep in it at night...
Until my sister suggested to add a waistband. And there you go! Say hi to another super comfortable dress. (Let's call it "secret pyjamas" now shall we ;)
Project details:
Fabric:
3.5m of Modal by Lillestoff (for both dresses)
Pattern:
Waterfall Raglan by Chalk and Notch (great pattern!)
Size & Pattern adjustments:
- Daughter: size 7 with length of size 10 (bust = 63cm, height = 140cm)
- Me: size 2 with 4cm length added. (bust = 83cm, height = 178cm)
For the neckbands, I used 75% of the neck opening length, which is shorter than what the pattern suggests, as this modal fabric is quite stretchy.
The fit is perfect, although I will probably take out the extra 4cm of length I added for me next time.
