5 PANT PATTERNS FOR BEGINNER SEWERS.

5 PANT PATTERNS FOR BEGINNER SEWERS.

Posted by Maaike Baudry on

We hear it all the time... pants can feel intimidating for beginner sewists. But we’re here to say, it doesn’t have to be that way!

There are some truly beginner-friendly patterns out there that look fabulous and can help take the mystery out of sewing pants. And, who knows, you might be sewing your own jeans sooner than you think.

1. Pomona Pants by Anna Allen Patterns

This might be the simplest pants pattern out there, it’s almost magic how easily they come together! If you’ve been putting off sewing pants, this is a fantastic place to start. The design uses just one main pattern piece (plus an optional back pocket), so it’s a quick confidence booster. These are stylish, wide-leg pants with an elastic waistband that work in a wide range of fabrics. The only catch? No side seam pockets… because there’s no side seam! But honestly, that simplicity is part of the charm.

Fabric suggestions: Smooth Operator (bamboo blend) or Linen

2. MADE-Line Pants by Madswick

If you love a good pocket, these pants deliver big time! The MADE-Line Pants are high-waisted, straight-legged, and roomy, so you don’t need to stress about a perfect fit. They’re comfy enough to wear as pyjamas, but smart enough to dress up for work or dinner. A great first pants pattern that you’ll likely make again and again.

Fabric suggestions: Smooth Operator (bamboo blend) or Linen

3. Opal Pants by Megan Nielsen

This pattern is ideal for those who like a bit more detail without a lot of complication. The Opal Pants are beginner-friendly and come with a lovely paperbag waist option. With two views included, you’ll get a lot of versatility from just one pattern—think casual linen for everyday or a cotton lyocell drill for a more structured, going-out look. This one’s great if you want to stretch your skills a little without diving in too deep.

Fabric suggestions: Smooth Operator (bamboo blend),  Linen, cotton lyocell drill

4. Long Foxie Boxies by Gracie Steel

These are relaxed yet stylish pants that really make the waistband the star. The high waist and boxy fit create a flattering shape, and the waistband is part of the leg pattern piece, so they’re quicker to sew than they look! They have side seam pockets, and the voluminous legs mean lightweight fabrics work best to keep the flow and drape just right.

Fabric suggestions: Smooth Operator (bamboo blend) or Linen

If you are making shorts, a cotton lawn is a perfect choice.

5. Lander Pants by True Bias

Okay, yes... these have a button fly. But don’t panic! The Lander Pants are actually a great entry into more tailored pants. The secret? One inch side seams that let you tweak the fit as you go. The instructions are clear and detailed, so you’ll learn new skills step by step.  A great pattern if you're ready to level up.

Fabric Suggestions: Heavy Cotton Drill or Denim

Sewing pants doesn’t have to be scary, we promise! We hope these patterns gave you the nudge you needed to give it a go.
