Summer can be a hectic time of year, and if you are looking for a new dress to sew, the abundance of choice can be a bit overwhelming.
So we thought we would share some of our favourite go-to sewing patterns in 5 classic styles and silhouettes.
And for the beginners out there, we thought of you! Many of these patterns are beginner friendly.
What all these patterns have in common is their simplicity. They are an easy, straightforward sew, while still including thoughtful details and allowing the fabric to be the hero!
The perfect projects to complete during the holidays when you need simple, yet satisfying.
We included fabric suggestions for each pattern. Enjoy!
1. Kalle Shirt + Shirtdress

Who doesn’t love a shirt dress?! The Kalle sewing pattern by Closet Core Patterns as it is quite special with that high low hem.
Depending on the fabric you use, you can create different styles.
If you are after a more classic look, we also love the Matilda and the Darling Ranges dresses from Megan Nielsen
Suggested fabrics:
Lots of options here: a Viscose for a flowy dress, or a cotton lawn for something more structured.
2. The Adrift Shift

The Adrift Shift is a classic summer staple by Gracie Steel.
It's no secret that we love the Adrift Shift here at MaaiDesign.
This dress lets the fabric do the talking with an understated elegance. (See Sam above in her version above in the Myriam Van Neste Blue Collage Cotton Lawn )
With its simple, yet flattering design, this dress will become a staple in your wardrobe.
Suggested fabrics:
This dress would look fabulous in printed cotton lawn or a linen.
3. The Cloud dress

The Cloud dress pattern by Sewing Patterns by Mason is perfect when you want something a little extra special.
Maaike made it in a washed organic denim and wrote a blogpost about it which you can read here.
It's an easy to sew dress although it involves a lot of gathers. But those are all the craze at the moment. The result is a flowy dress that just feels so divine to wear on a hot summer day.
Suggested fabrics:
A checkered linen would be very fashionable. For a more drapey version, any viscose fabric would be great too.
4. Paradise Patterns Honeygirl Dress (expansion pack)

This has been on our 'to-sew' list FOREVER! The Honeygirl Dress is actually the extension pattern for the Honeygirl top, so you will need the base pattern too.
It's a great shape, looks amazing as a long-sleeved, long dress too! With two different neckline options. The short version is giving us tennis vibes - here we come Aus Open!
It is specifically designed for pointelle, but any jersey with a good amount of stretch will work.
Fabric suggestion:
This one is perfect for our Vintage Ribbed Cotton Jersey, our pointelles and printed cotton jerseys.
5. The Cuff Dress

The Cuff Dress by The Assembly Line is another easy to sew dress, but still very stylish. It's been one of our most popular patterns and it's available in a large range of sizes.
It looks great in a solid or printed fabric. It’s the type of pattern that really lets the fabric do the talking!
Fabric suggestions:
Cotton lawn, Organic Washed Denim, Cotton Double Gauze.
This list of course could have been much longer but I hope it has offered some inspiration.
