Corduroy is the fabric of nostalgia, comfort, and enduring style.
Defined by its wales, the velvety ridges that run vertically down the cloth, corduroy brings instant texture to any handmade wardrobe. Whether you are looking for a fine needlecord for a shirt or a chunky jumbo cord for a jacket, corduroy fabric for sewing offers a tactile richness that plain weaves simply cannot match.

Understanding Corduroy
Wale count explained
The wale refers to the number of ridges per inch.
Needlecord, 16 to 21 wale: Very fine ridges. Looks almost like velvet. Great for shirts and dresses.
Standard cord, 10 to 12 wale: The classic trouser weight.
Jumbo or elephant cord, 3 to 6 wale: Thick, chunky ridges. Perfect for jackets and upholstery.

Texture and warmth
The pile of corduroy traps air, making it naturally warm. It is the perfect fabric for autumn and winter sewing.
Why Sewists Love Corduroy
Colour richness
The pile catches the light, giving corduroy a depth of colour that is hard to beat. Deep navys, rich rusts, and forest greens look particularly good in corduroy.
Durability
Corduroy is tough. It was originally a workwear fabric, and it stands up to daily wear beautifully.
Sewing Techniques
Nap direction
Corduroy has a nap, meaning a direction to the pile. If you brush it one way, it feels smooth. The other way, it feels rough.
Rule: Cut all pattern pieces with the nap running in the same direction, usually down. If you flip one piece, it will appear a different colour.
Seam finishes
Corduroy sheds. Finish seams with a serger or a zig zag stitch immediately after cutting.
Pressing tips
Never press corduroy face down on a hard ironing board. You will crush the pile.
Tip: Place a fluffy towel on your ironing board and press the corduroy face down into the towel. The towel loops support the corduroy ridges.
